I have just bought a Mariner 9.9 from a guy that used it for less than 20 hours or so, it looks to be in perfect condition, but...

I'm aware that Mariner 4 strokes should be laid tiller side down, but the guy seems to have had it laid on the floor the wrong way up...

I haven't fired it up yet, as I'm not sure what potential damage that could cause, or what I could do to avoid doing any damage.

I'd appreciate some guidance on what I should do. Thanks for your time and consideration.

"Aye, well, some folks can find more positions to lay a 4 stroke than you'll find in the Kama Sutra, but {as in real life} some positions are better than others,

I see on page 21 of the manual that the motor should be as in the graphic above, but I get the feeling that many folks don't ever RTFM, even though they may have a motor for years.

Although the motor looks to be in great shape, hardly even a scratch on it, my concern is that it may have been left the wrong way up 50% of the time

Not sure how this might damage the engine though ? or if it isn't a cause for real concern, other than some oil leakage, out of, or into the motor ?

Just wondering if there's anything I could do to alleviate any potential problem before I fire the motor up ?

"Bob, biggest issue is oil lea

"Bob, biggest issue is oil leaking down into the cylinders. Won't hurt anything but real tough to get a 4 stroke to start with a cylinder full of oil.

If that is the case I would set the motor upright, check the oil and make sure the crankcase is full. Then pull the plugs and put a bit of gas into each cylinder through the plug holes, then turn the motor over by hand for a few rotations - try and wash out the cylinders - then try firing it up..."
