This can't be right, can it?

I decided to replace my exhaust manifolds and the risers due to higher temps lately. I've had a new set of risers for several years now and when I started working with them, I noticed a little piece that came out one of the water ports. So, I decided to tap on the side of it and look what I found and these are new out of the box. I'm getting more crap out of the new ones than I found in the old ones. So...I called the outfit I bought them from and they said it's just pieces from the casting left over.

What do you guys think about this? I mean if I hadn't found this, I'd probably be plugged up likity split, wouldn't I?

It says GLM "Good Luck Marine" on the side...made in China...good luck w/them. Very poor quality control there or the castings would have been cleaned. An ultrasonic bath will clean out all of the loose crap. Radiator shops can do it or you can shake, rattle and roll them.

Well that's discouraging. If I have them cleaned out, should I feel alright about using them? There was cheaper ones than that out there that I avoided. Hmm!

Well don't get discouraged. Some people have had good luck w/GLM. Rinse and blow them out and have at it. Check the mating surfaces for untrue fit.

The water port on the left is the only one I'm getting the crap out of. The rest are clean as a whistle. It was the same with the ones I'm replacing. Probably all the stuff I DIDN"T knock out when I installed them 3 years ago.
Thanks for the input guyjg. Very much appreciated.

I don't know what moulding process is used in China. If they used the "lost foam" process there wouldn't be any crud in it. You'll be all right.

Interesting thread. Just yesterday I got called out on a recommendation I made for an antique car engine rebuilder. My friend wasn't happy to have the same sort of stuff com out of a 31 Chevy block even though it was boiled out by the rebuilder. Nothing major came out of the block but enough to make one wonder. Most likely normal for some shmudge stuff to come out as the block dries internally. Al W.

There will always be some scale buildup as an engine ages. W/out an ultasonic bath a mild acid wash is the only other way to remove scale from a water jacket.

Not having known just what the GLM product may have been like, I also have two GLM exhaust manifold due here in a couple days too. You're suggesting that I return all the GLM products and use another brand? What would you suggest? Is Osco alright? It IS made here in the states.

This is how the parts were listed. I thought I WAS buying Barr manifolds. Wouldn't this be false advertising?

BARR MARINE POWER INDAMAR V8 EXHAUST MANIFOLD | GLM Part Number: 56230

Guess I'll chalk it up to experience. I've ordered the Osco parts and feeling better about it. Now, to satisfy my curiosity. What are some of the negative issues one might expect using the GLM parts, other than what I've experienced? I'd imagine untrue surfaces would have to be on the list somewhere.

Porosity issues w/the castings causing water leaks is what I have seen posted, incomplete castings causing dips in the mating surfaces and just piss poor products.
