"I just got finished burning off 100 gallons of crappy fuel left over from last summer. Took 2 sets of filters to use the fuel. Anyway, I ran the tanks down to empty, and just threw 10 gallons in. My new plan is to install a third tank-something small like 30-40 gallons. I can run off of that tank and only fill my main tanks for long trips. Fresh fuel all the time. Stu"

This is an interesting concept and I was thinking of trying to come up with an idea for the same thing. We carry 240 gallons of fuel when full but it is not enough to get us into spots we would like to be. With all of the safety issues to understand I have not really dedicated that much brain space to it YET...With all of the other stuff going on in my life AND THEN the boat's second engine taking a dump, I don't have any more thinking room left ! If you find a good technique, I for one am interested.

I really can't afford deck space or cockpit area so it needs to be below decks and between stringers and other things, it looks like custom measurements would be needed for a permenant install UNLESS you are thinking of something under the gunwales 6"-8" wide and 2 foot tall by 5-6' long, poly, removeable and ... and what else?"

Al, this is a great link. They have about every tank you can imagine. I'm looking to do pretty much the opposite that you are. I don't want to extend my range. With the cost of fuel being what it is I'm not going to be doing much travelling this summer. A small tank that I can burn off in 1 fluke trip or short pleasure cruise is what I'm after. If I do go away I'll simply fill the main tanks. Stu"

Thanks for the link ...Are you thinking that the fuel will go bad during the down time in between trips? We should consider a boat pool. Kinda like a car pool only better...nobody's goin to work!"

"What if you repaced one larger tank with two smaller ones, one 10% smaller, one 90% smaller, roughly same space, put them where the old tank was without compromiseing valuable space? Then its just running the hose and installing a valve. Of coarse, then you're also getting rid of a perfectly good tank, but how old is the tank, there might be lots of old residue in it anyway, clean it and have a spare...."

"Thanks emac. Actually, space is not a problem. I can find room for a couple of hundred extra gallons if needed. My primary filter housing already has a fitting for another tank so plumbing is not a problem. Another plus to my day tank idea is that I can fuel the boat from jerry cans and save $1 a gallon!

"Don't see why you have to do all that--honestly. Fuel should not go bad over the winter IF YOU STABILIZED IT properly. I did, and the motors run same as last year when the fuel was new.

And we have that 10 % evil-nol crap!

"Jeff, I used stabilizer. The varnish and crap that came out of my filters may be from the ethanol "cleaning" my tanks. The fuel in my tanks were no longer clear-more of an amber color. So let me see now. I have to get rid of my beautiful fiberglass tanks because they're being slowly dissolved. I have to get rid of my flat tappet engine because it's going to slowly grind itself apart. I have to change 4 televisions in my house because they're not digital. I can't repair the ac in my Jeep wrangler cause it takes r12. It's never ending. Stu"

"Hi Guys...I just joined the group and this world in March 52....I'll go back. 82 33Bertram gas tank dissolving, engine and genny all screwed up, to many computers of things so I can't work on them, and gas prices heading for the stratosphere, whats goin on ???? I'm thinking of putting 2 tanks to replace single main tank, I too won't be doing to much cruising. At 35gals/hr at 18 knots....thats $10 a mile...crazy."

"Ken, I love the pre made in Italy Bertrams. Bulletproof sea boats. Probably outlive both of us. Anyway no one could ever accuse an old Bertram of being fast. David Pascoe wrote an article on just what we're talking about-going slow. He says a lot of the sport fisherman will burn 10 gal/hr @ 10 knts. That is exactly what my boat burns. I've resigned myself to inshore trips at 10 knots-that's it. You may have to do some mods like bigger rudders-which I'm looking into now-because of the poor handling at low speeds but I think it's worth it. I can't afford to buy a 35knot battlewagon let alone feed and house it so 10 knots it is. This is a link to Dave's site.

"Stu, I've had the B33 for 12 years now..great boat, well made, very roomy for 33 ft. Downside is it's very heavy (#24,000), very high with deep-vee makes it a bit rolly, but now its our summer home. Except for a few short trip....she'll be a "dock queen". I just hope this gas situation doesn't lead to economic disaster for the US. What kind of boat is your ?????Ken"
