"Hello.
Guy, you and couple others have recommended converting to the 1/4" carb base gasket to help get the idle mixture properly set and better idle performance when engine is at temp.
Could someone please point me to a suppler, this site was the first checked. I can't seem to find a reference that isn't a full gasket kit or that specifies it is the 1/4" one. Guess I need a better part hunting license.
Carb number is for a 1985 470: MCM 170/470, 1389-8489
Thanks in advance! Mark"

I believe the Mercury gasket is the one you are looking for, not aftermarket.

I was just going to ask the same question. I have called every Merc Dealer on the North Coast of Ohio and no one seems to know anything about a 1/4 inch thick gasket. I can't find it on any of the parts break downs schematics for the Mercarb. (I have the same as Mark here.) I have found an adapter plate which happens to be a 1/4 inch thick.
In talking with a Merc Mech he stated that some folks had issues with hots starts and Merc's fix was to raise the carb the 1/4 inch to keep it cooler. Then some folks happen to find out that this also improve fuel economy.
Now I'm am wondering if this is what ppl have been refereing to as "the" 1/4 inch thick gasket?

I bought mine at a Merc. dealer who told me it was the correct gasket for 1987 Mercarb 2 BBL carb. It made a BIG difference.

# 14 is a pie shaped adapter used to level the carb when the motor is mounted at an angle such as when coupled to a v drive. It would make the carb out of level if used with normal I/O configuration.

"Hi Guy,
Would you happen to still have the shop ticket that has that part number which you got?
Barry, yes I don't want to put the carb out of level.

I'll be at the Merc Dealer in the Ozarks Sat. and check with a couple other independent shops as well. (Of course I've got twins.)

Worst case if anybody knows where to get the proper material I might be able to make some on a waterjet at a shop I know from the orginal profile.
Thanks, Mark"

"I should ask the forum, if you can't get standard base gasket material, I could use standard glass/phenolic material.

It would of course be hard but would still provide thermal/physcial - isolation/spacing and then use two standard gaskets on assembly.

Anybody think this would work?
Thanks, Mark"
