"hello,as i only run the engine in the good british summer,do i really need thermostats,i know it will run cold and can increase fuel, but removal elimnates the risk of overheating, any ideas ?"

"First of all it will run lean

"First of all it will run lean, at least on idle.
Then depending on which engine you have, it might create an air-bubble on top of the cylinder that might result in loss of cooling for the rectifier if you have a water-cooled type (V4 & V6 engines).
Normally the thermostats does not fail 'closed', they fail 'opened' or plain disintegrated! Yamaha on the other hand fails closed!
You are running in total a bigger risk without than with, providing you use an original thermostat!
I have seen aftermaket thermostats that fails closed, never an OEM."

would you know the opening tem

would you know the opening temp of the thermostats & is there a reason the buzzer goes off with new thermostats..thanks

"yeah i am having the same pro

"yeah i am having the same problem, replaced thermostats with sierra brand thru wholesale marine, after a few minutes running the warning horn goes off, should i remove them and by oem or is there another reason?
thanks much
jeff sanderson"

"are you sure its the thermost

"are you sure its the thermostat warning and not the fuel warning ,have you disconnected the heater sensor wires when the horn is going off and are you using the vro"

"thanks for the replys, i have

"thanks for the replys, i have replaced the water pump [impellar], at the same time i did the thermostats, the reason for the replacements was because i wasn't getting any water out of the port hole or weep hole [not sure what that tube is called], the engine had sand around the thermosats so i figured that was the problem, now that they both have been changed the weep hole is getting water thru it but after a few minutes i notice some steam coming out of the hole and the horn went on."

"Pull the gear housing, attach

"Pull the gear housing, attach a water hose to the water pipe going up, remove thermostats and FLUSH!
Sand in the thermostat might indicate some build-up around in the system."

"ok great idea, the only probl

"ok great idea, the only problem is that i already winterized the engine, should i be concerned about the termostats not having antifreeze thru this area?"

"No need for antifreeze in an

"No need for antifreeze in an outboard. If stored vertical ,trimmed down, all water will drain out."

Check if the thermos had a sma

Check if the thermos had a small hole through them alot of after market ones dont and hot water cannot flow to open the thermos once the engine reaches operating temp
