"have 1981 raw water 318 engines--calls for a 142 degree thermostat-- the ones i have found have a smaller diameter and are too small for the housing--the 160 degree ones listed would fit, but would make the engine run too hot--any ideas?"

My understanding is the factor

My understanding is the factory used 140 in fresh water systems and 160 in raw water...However in a raw water salt situation the 140 generally is used to reduce corrosion.
