thermostat temp

guys,at what temp should a 142-thermostat open when looking at the temp gauge. i noticed mine opens at 190-195. this is a new 142* sierra.after opening it comes down to 160-165. this seems awful hot to me.all parts on the motor are new.1987 350,a-1, thanks.

Do you have Fresh Water or an Enclosed cooling system?

fresh water/salt water.a-1 stern drive. currently running on ear muffs/water hose in drive way.thanks

From what I understand 143 degrees for fresh water and 160 something for enclosed system. I'd test the thermostat you have in there, and also check out your water pump and cooling system flow for possible blockages.

I'm with Chief. Get yourself an IR temp gun (cheap now and good to have on board) and shoot the temp sender. Will not be exact but pretty close to the real reading. This will confirm if your gauge is giving you a true picture before you start tearing things apart.
