Thermostat position

I have just started a new project of rebuilding what I understand to be a AQ260B. I brought this engine as a new block and all its parts and ancillaries in cardboard boxes and have been slowly putting it together, My question which may sound dumb so forgive me but is the thermostat located up inside the housing in behind the lock ring? Or in the top of the manifold in the grove my thoughts point toward up in the housing as it sits behind the ring really well but have to check.

Forgot to to say it's a raw water cooled engine.

The thermostat is seated above the lock ring in that housing.

No problem. Btw, if you are running in salt water unse the 143 degree thermostat rather then the 160. I run the same motor and have used it now for years after the recommendation from Rick here on this forum.

Have just checked and I have the 143 fitted, thanks again I'm sure the project will cause a few more questions yet !
