Thermostat gets hot

"so as usual for the beginning

"so as usual for the beginning of the season, i am trying to figure out how to get my boat running, and after rebuilding the carb. and hooking everything back up i notice the thermostat for the chock is getting extremely hot before even starting the engine. any ideas??
also trying to figure out the idle rpm's for this boat. '86 merc. 4cyl 130hrspwr.....i think?"

When you say thermostat for the choke I assume you are talking about where the wires are connected up to the housing on the end of the choke butterfly ?
That little unit contains a curled up Bi metal spring, as soon as you turn on your ignition power is supplied to it and the resistor starts to get hot and unwind, slowly bringing the choke off.
It should get hot.
But just double check your wiring to it and observe the operation of the choke when you start the engine with the spark arrestor off.
