can anyone tell me if i will need anything more than a thermostat, gasket and the rubber grommet to to do an r & r on a 75 hp merck three cyl 2 stroke? do I have to replace the poppet valve as well.
Thanks

Nope on the "anything more", other than something to undo the cover of course - it's a fairly simple, 5 minute job.

As to the poppet - how old is it? More than 5 years I would tend to go ahead and replace it.

You can argue the point either way for both the poppet and thermostat, but I look at it like this - if you drop 50 bucks every 5 years on "cooling system parts" (aside from the impeller which should be done every 2-3 years for the average motor) and you never overheat and fry your powerhead, it was probably "money well spent". A rebuild on a 3 cylinder can be done at home for about a grand or $2500 at the shop - hmmmm poppet is about 5 bucks, ditto the diaphram and it's under the same cover as the thermostat so you will already be in there...

Thanks Graham but it looks like I do need somthing else to do the job I busted a bolt off getting the cover of, looks like a soft bolt it shouldnt be hard to geet out.
Thanks again

Been there myself many times - never had much luck with the "easy out's" - mostly drill it and tap it out.

That cover is a bad spot - no matter how good the gasket it you always seem to get corrosion on the bolts.

The bolts are $1.40 each at Merc. :)

I was thinking of replacing all the bolts on the water pump cover with stainless steel or should i stick with the factory bolts? Is a reason stainless wouldt work?
