Hi, I need to replace the two thermostats in my 1990 Evinrude 115. The housing is buried at back of engine between engine and lower housing. Very Very small space to work. Has anyone done the thermostats on this engine without removing the power head?

Tnks, Ron

Yes.... I've done just that many times. Not for the faint at heart though... time and patience, a hand held propane torch to loosen those three bolts perhaps, also a custom bent 7'16" box wrench can be a big help. Just get that plastic rear cover out of the way.

Going back together..... Put it all back together on the workbench, held together with a couple pieces of fine wire wrapped around it (thermos/gaskets/sealer). Once you get the bolts started, you can cut those wires and slip them out of the way. Works for me.

Thanks Joe. What do you mean by get the plastic rear cover out of the way? Ron

Attached underneath to the hood pan is a plastic or fiberglass molding about 4" or so high.... a decorative piece to hide the power-head retaining bolts. The back piece is held there by two vertical bolts (inside) and four horizontal bolts (outside). Remove that to gain the access you'll need to the thermostat retaining bolts.
