"Thanks for your comments on the speedometer...we're looking to see if we see what you referred to. But get this: we overheated last time out and now are investigating the cause. From your many responses to others with the same issue, we know to check the impeller, stern drive water hose housing, and several other things. READ in our SELOC manual, too. It is not clear to us about one or two things. Forgive, and don't forget we are newbies!!
When we bought this boat, the guy said "you don't have to add water to this engine unless you are in sea water, because it uses water from the lake to cool the engine. If you are in salt water, then you have to have the radiator full and hit this switch so as not to get salt water in the system." Or that's what we thought we were told. There was a lot of talk about the boat at that time.
So we are running on a lake, the motor is staying cool and all is right with the world. Until suddenly we overheat. So we read the downloaded owners manual and the SELOC manual, and find nothing elementary enough to explain this engine's cooling system. If our raw water pump is clogged or impeller broken, etc, could we have just switched to "sea" and had the radiator water circulating to keep the motor cool, or is the radiator ALWAYS to have 50/50 mix of coolant/fresh water? We are thinking it is the latter, and we have just been operating thinking the raw water pump is all that's needed. DUH???
Because we overheated, we will look at all the things the manual says to and find the problem, change the oil in the motor, and test it out. Is there some elementary document somewhere that just teaches beginners all this stuff?? LOL WE NEED IT!!"
