"Thank you & others for your help. My 87 135hp runs like a raped ape. LOL. But,.. The temp guage says its getting hot, it pees very well, I pulled the two thermostat housings to check them and none are there. Any suggestions why it would run hot? I am going to put in two new thermostats and a now pressure relief valve before I run it again, too much work to blow it up now. Thank you all again."

"Dale, first off I would test

"Dale, first off I would test the temp sensor. It may be throwing bad numbers at your gauge and you could end up chasing your tail and emptying your wallet looking changing numerous "other" components..."

"Hi there!

Is the guage acc

"Hi there!

Is the guage accurate? Worth your while to check that one too...

Regards from a wintery Johannesburg, South Africa!

Benjamin."

"I have the temp unit on order

"I have the temp unit on order. Would the water pressure relief on the starboard side have anything to do with this? Maybe its the 105 degree days we have been having in toasty Virginia USA, LOL
Thanks Benjamin and Graham"

"Up to about 1500 rpms it'

"Up to about 1500 rpms it's pretty much the thermostats that control the temp after that (with the resulting increase in water pressure) the poppet(s) or pressure relief valves take over.

If a poppet is leaking, has a worn diaphram, seized/broken spring etc it will not allow enough cooling water to pass which can result in an overheat.

Your thermostats should allow the motor to get up to operating temp (they are set to open at 143 degrees).

You didn't mention if you are getting a warning horn for overheat or just your gauge is what you are relying on.

The horn would go off at 240 degrees and shut off again below 210."

"I never heard a horn, dont ev

"I never heard a horn, dont even know if they are hooked up or work. There are no thermostats installed as of now. I mentioned that in first post, I dont see how not having them could cause overheating though. I am going to install new ones. I recieved the sending unit today and will install that and see what happens. If it were the pressure relief valve, how do I check? It does pee very well, but I dont have a water pressure guage to check it, should I install one on my boat?"

"Hi there guys!

Just a quic

"Hi there guys!

Just a quick one, are all the water ports open? Maybe there is a blockage somewhere and resulting in a hot spot near the temp sender?
Might have picked some muck up or previous impeller piece lodged somewhere...

Best of luck!

Day is warming up now! Still not good enough to boat though...

Regards!

Benjamin."

"Thanks Benjamin, my wife said

"Thanks Benjamin, my wife said she wants your colder weather, LOL. How does one " un-muck" their ports? I have ran the engine with the ears on while I was tuning it and it pushes a good stream out of the tube when running in the river. Is there a different way to flush the system?"

"the v6 mer thermostats are vi

"the v6 mer thermostats are vital for the motor to cool properly, with out them there is no real restriction on the water flow, once installed though your water flow out the tell tale will decrease alot until the motor warms up, but they need to be there on any V6 merc"

"Hey there!

"Hey there!

Send her, just don't forget to send some currency... Your Greenback will get almost 8 of my rands... Almost equates to a litre of fuel!

I've seen some motors that have a sieve or type of filter to prevent foreign objects lodging in the powerhead. Others I've seen do not have this "trap". So, not too sure of your motor if one of these are fitted or has been and subsequently been removed... Don't know if one could be fitted as aftermarket kit or not.

Not too sure of checking for debris, these things are usually found when a motor has been stripped for re-build... I'mm sure some of the veterans would jump in here for some advice?

O ja, the weather here is generally great. Some winter days climb up to 22' C on the highveld. Coastal areas almost hitting 30' C... And that's for WINTER!!!! It's just the evenings and early mornings that hit zero or sub-zero.
