terrova wiring

i just replaced the power head motor on my terrova there is 3 wires black, red and a small brown wire i broke the small brown with a inline fuse. it broke flush with the shaft and cannot splice it without cutting length off the shaft. the trolling motor seems to work fine without out. what is the wire for.
