Terrible gas mileage

I have an '82 Johnson seahorse 70 hp. I live by the river where i usually run about 5 or 6 miles tops on the river. I try not to run it full throttle more or less at a cruising speed. But it seems to burn a lot of gas. About 10 gallons (for 5 or 6 miles). I did find a leak at my fuel filter could that be a problem? But wouldn't that be too much oxygen? I rebuilt the carbs this year. Any help is appreciated.

"Lee, If your fuel drips into the river, unburned, your mileage will suffer. The fuel pump will make up for the leaking fuel, so the motor will not run out.

You can have a slight fuel leak, and never know it."

That makes sense. Is it absolutely necessary to have an inline fuel filter because that is the second filter i've been through. I'm tired of dealing with that particular brand fuel filter. The fittings are plastic i was wondering if teflon tape would help it from not leaking out anymore. Would the gas dissolve the teflon tape away or not?

"This leak must be on the pressure side of the pump to create that kind of usage, the filter is on suction side. I read Your post as 10 gal/hour at the speed You indicate. Have You checked that fuel is not pouring out of the carbs? That engine might burn around 5 gal/hr at full speed maximum."

"5 or 6 miles at say, 20 mph cruising speed, means you are only running about 15 minutes.... and you are consuming 10 gallons of gas in 15 minutes?!?
Hard to believe....
I can barely pour gas that fast through a funnel
Fuel must be literally spraying out somewhere.
I rode on a boat once that had three 300HP outboards...total of 900HP...it used about 1 Gallon per minute at full throttle which is about what you say your 70 is drinking?"
