I am in talk with someone to b

I am in talk with someone to buy two mid-80 tower of power 115 merc outboard. The seller said to me
"ser. no. of distributor equipped motor 4700603 electronic ignition motor 4395126"
What is the difference between the two? Any help would be greatly apprecaited.

Simple---- Mechanically there

Simple---- Mechanically there is not much difference. The difference is one has a belt driven distributor ignition system and the other has an alternator / magneto driven ignition system with 2 CD boxes and six coils.

If those are the serial number

If those are the serial numbers the 4700603 is a 1977 and the other is a 1976.

Thanks for getting back to me!

Thanks for getting back to me! How did you find the years out for the engines? Is there a website where I can type in the serial number and find this out for myself?
Are the engine parts still interchangable except for the starter system (trying to combine 2 entines to make 1 working engine)
Great help - Cheers!

Ignition systems are different

Ignition systems are different and that is not the same as a " starter system " .A starter system is defined as what turns the motor to get it running. The ignition system provides spark to the various plugs at the right time to ignite the fuel.

"Thanks for pointing that out

"Thanks for pointing that out mate!
Can you please let me know if the other engine parts, other than the ignition system on the two engines, would be interchangable?"
