"I am in the process of re-assembling a FD15 1961 18hp Johnson Sea Horse--
as with most of these models there is a spring tensioned Phillister screw above the tansom mount that allows for adjusting the tension for lowering or raising the motor--
for some reason, any adjustment to this screw has not effect on the tension--
I find if I tighten the brass nut and bolt that squeeze the two halves of the transom mount together, I can adjust the tension that way and the motor will stay in whatever position I set it--I rebuilt a qd23 last summer but didnt run into this problem--any ideas would be helpful--

"Tom... The tension screw that you mention adjusts the tension on a brake of sorts pertaining to turning the engine. This is to keep the engine from swinging wildly when the throttle is increased, and also to help keep the operators efforts at a minimum pertaining to keeping on course.

The transom bracket nut, as you've discovered, is the adjustment pertaining to the tilt of the engine."

thanks--tightening the screw didnt seem to stop the motor from swiveling--I may have put in the wrong screw and its too short--ill check it out tomorrow and see if a longer screw is needed--
