Temperature gauge is off on my port engine.

Last year, the engine overheated and the temperature gauge was ruined/recalibrated. When the engine is cold it reads 140 and warmed up it reads 235. I took my infrared heat gun down and testing the engine everywhere. The hottest anything read was 165. Is this something I can recalibrate back to normal, or am I looking at replacing the temperature sensor? Also where is the temperature sensor and what does it look like?"

The gauge was ruined? Can't see how an overheat would ruin a gauge. Maybe the sender! Was the sender replaced? If so, I suspect the sender and gauge are not compatible. The sender resistance must be compatible with the gauge for it to work right. They're iether not compatible or one of the two is faulty.

Replace the sender. Be sure to get one for your type of boat (ie: single or dual helm. They are different!)

Overheating cooked the semiconductor in the sender. The guage couldn't have been harmed. I see this problem all the time. Incidentally, on twin station boats I prefer to run two separate senders...easy enough to plumb them both into the intake.. that way you don't need the more expensive twin-station sender...I do same with oil pressure senders.
