temp gauge not working merc 170

my temp gauge isnt working on my 1985 mercruiser 170. I did a forum search but didnt find anything pertaining to my engine. Another question I have is what is the difference between the merc 170 and 470. Ive been told they are basicallyu the same. I think they labeled them 170 1984-1985?

Ground the sender wire to the block w/key on...if the gauge pegs then replace the sender. 170=470
