I have a 1990 225 evinrude(vro). The temp alarm went off at 160 degrees. After backing off the throttle to limp back to the ramp, it went off at about 145-150 degrees (according to the temp guage). Could I have a bad sensor or does the problem go deeper?

Re: temp alarm

Due to what it cost to restore a engine that has overheated bad, it's best not to second guess the condition of the water pump. I'd strongly suggest that you have the lower unit dropped in order to visibly inspect that unit. If the pump is a couple years old or so, it's probably a good idea to replace it anyhow.

Also, check the thermostat assemblies.
