"I installed a teleflex tach and hooked it up as directed. gray to send, black to ground, purple to ign. When i start the engine the tach works, but when i have the engine at WOT it goes beyond 7000 on the tach. Im sure the motor is not turning that fast. There is a selector switch on the back the is supposed to be 1/2 the number of alternator poles, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6. I have tried them all and still having this issue. Help"

Test your charging system. A defective diode in the bridge rectifier can cause those problems.

"Replaced the Rectifier and still have the issue, Double checked the wires for breaks and it looks good. Is there a way that i could test the charging stator? I put a ohm meter on the yellow and gray wires with it disconnected and it was mesureing out at 2 ohms.

Also how many amps does this charging system put out? 1982, merc 40 with the #2 charging system."

2 ohms is OK. Did you check the yellow wire to ground? It should read infinity. I believe your stator is rated at 6 or 9 amps. (Perhaps someone else know for sure) If all that is good then the tach must be bad. Nothing else comes into play for a tach circuit.

The yellow to ground is testing out good. The Tach is brand new out the box but I guess it could be bad. The strange thing is that it is smooth and steady until about 2000 rpm and it pegs the tach and stays there after that.
