They work well; just make sure the tarp is waterproof and is vented on both ends of the boat. Draping the tarp like an old pup tent allows plenty of air flow under it where moisture collects and provides mold an environment to grow. Rain and snow will fall off quickly. The sharp angle of the draping keeps water from ponding and snow from collapsing the cover. Leave all your storage doors in the boat propped open and stern drain plug out.

"Consider putting a couple of dehumidifing canisters inside the boat with new chemical; calcium chloride I believe it is. Available at any boat shop.
These will absorb excess moisture that may build up inside the tarp and could eliminate mildew and mold growth, as well as corroded wires and terminals.
Cheap insurance.
If you have power handy another good idea is a small electric heater, or even a 100 watt light bulb hooked to a temperature sensitive inline switch. The heater or light can be set to turn on when the temp drops below freezing.
