tank venting problems

it seems that there are two plastic vent types - one is threaded all its length with an o ring and has to be completely unscrewed to vent the tank and the other (quicksilver type) has a channel cut in the thread which presumably means it will vent effectively when only partially unscrewed (a more failsafe design?) - the former type has caused me problems in that the suction pulls the plug inwards, the o ring 'seals' and seems to cause a vacuum - the latter I guess would vent more effectively because of the channel - anyone got any ideas/experience with this?

Drill a hole in the cap and insert a long sheet metal screw to close it (and remove the scew to....you know).

thanks - on closer inspection the long threaded type does have a vent hole halfway down its length but as you say, an open (drilled) whole can't clog!
