Tangled Rope Caused damage to Lower Unit XDP

I ran over a dock line and it

I ran over a dock line and it got caught up in my dual prop. Upon getting the boat out of the water I noticed that the rope must have chewed away some ( about 2 or 3 inches of the composite material around the outside of the opening of the lower unit where where the prop shaft extends out at the 1200 position. Has anyone experienced anything similar? Is there major concerns? I have a 2005 XDP sterndrive. I will post a picture when I can.

Here is a picture. A volvo-pen

Here is a picture. A volvo-penta mechanic says that the damage was only cosmetic and that no other repair is needed or available. Anyone have any opinions. I have asked my insurance to look at it but have no idea how they make any type of determination for replacement.

"mmmm.... if that was my drive

"mmmm.... if that was my drive

If the insurance company won't fix it of if the deducatble was high, I'd try to fix it myself.

Why...? I'd be concerned that that hole being where it was would result over time in some fairly disturbed water flow at a point I would not want that and eventually cause cavitation damage.

My fix...First attempt, find out if anything will "stick" to the composite. Depending on what that was, I'd get a stainless steel band clamp and cut it to be a dam on the inside radius of the "divot", using modeling clay to seal the edges and small clamps to hold it in place temporarily. I'd make sure that this strip of stainless was well coated with heavy wax.... other wise removing it could be "fun". Then, I mix up what ever sticks with a filler (micro ballons??) and "fill" the "divot".
When hard, I'd sand it fair and smooth using a strip of sandpaper like a shoe shine boy.

Alternatively, if nothing will stick...
I'd then get a section of a stainless steel band clamp ( it looks as if it would be the right size) and cut it at least two inches longer than the "divot"...I get a dremel tool and clean up the top edge just enough so that the SS strip will fit flush. I'd drill two small holes in the end of the band clamp and screw it into the housing using small SS "self tappers" or "sheet metal screws". Then I'd get a dremel and grind off the protruding screw ends so they don't score the prop hub."

"the VP tech said that the dam

"the VP tech said that the damaged can be repaired by fiberglass. the cost would be 1,100.00. I know nothing about fiberglass, does this amount seem excessive for the damaged area for a fiberglass repair?"

"Robert's on the right tra

"Robert's on the right track, pull the prop then start by cleaning/grind the area smooth and clean, then make your dam on the inside you may be able to use small C clamps Coat only the dam with surfboard waxs before you clamp,,,All marine supply stores have fiberglas repair kits,,,some under $100.00 cut glass cloth to size two maybe three pieces to build up the repair area, the resin is a two part system,, follow the directions and you should be fine..Coat the area with the mixed resin and lay in your first piece of cloth, coat this again and add another until you feel its the correct hight.use a paint brush to make sure you have no air traped between the layers..let things set and sand/paint and you got a nice patch..."
