Tachometer Replacement problem Yanmar

Hi All,

Have a VDO tach that is still working, trying to replace with a newer VDO but the new one works but not quite well enough.. Idle speed seems high and then it does not increase linear when engine revs up. Have tried all the available DIP settings, any other tricks to get it working? Engine is a 3YM20 in a Beneteau 323.
 
Suggest you get an optical tach or another independent data source before fault declaration regarding tachometer accuracy.

are you sure the new tach is compatible with the yanmar setup? Have seen Yanmar use both the alternator and a magnetic pickup approach - not sure which your particular engine uses....yanmars are also known to experience corroded electrical connectors frequently...

Well, the old one worked fine, so the signal should be reliable. VDO can't give me a straight answer whether the old model and the new model should use same signal or not, but I've tried all 4 DIP switch positions available and none work correctly.

VDO 333-15272 is the new one N 02 012 196 is the old one, not sure that info is going to help anybody.

I guess what I'm looking for is maybe some common error (somehow used the wrong W lead?) or some hack that might make it work, I heard about putting a diode or resistor inline sometimes might help?
 
I doubt a diode resolve the issue...

I wud check around and find a oscilloscope and see what sign is present and go from there..
