" I have a 1990 Johnson 30 Hp tiller (sn J30RESB) converted to a long shaft, rope start. It is my understanding that in order to put a regular tach ( not a TINY TACH ) I need electric start. I am confused as to what electric start has to do with a tach . Could someone please explain this to me. "

" A tach on a outboard runs on the altenator. You do not have to install electric start, but you must have an altenator. Good Luck "
