"I have a 1972 Evinrude 50HP elecric start/shift, and it's a great motor. I want to put a tach. on it and can't even find anything about it in my service or parts manuals. I keep hearing about 4-pole, 8-pole & 12-pole alternators?? I can't find a Tach. that says it will work on a 2-cycle, 2-cylinder outboard. I know the grey wire in my wiring harness is for a tach., but that is the end of my tach. knowledge. I know someone out there knows just what I need..And maybe where I can purchase it..Thanks..JIM"

"Jim.... You need a tachometer

"Jim.... You need a tachometer that operates off a a six (6) pulse charging system (available just about everywhere).

If the tachometer has terminals, that gray wire connects to the "S" (sensor) terminal. a purple wire (12v supply) would lead from the "A" (acessory) terminal of the ignition switch to the "I" (ignition) tachometer terminal, a black wire would lead from any known ground to the "G" (ground) tachometer terminal, a blue or red wire would lead from the light switch to the related light terminal of the tachometer if one exists.

If the tachometer simply has wires leading from it, it's just a matter of matching the above colors, wire to wire."

"This is the same motor that you speak of and this is what I did. I ran a wire from the top post in the harness to my tac. You can see the yellow wire I installed from the top. The picture ain't very close but you can see where I ran the wire from. This connects to where the gray wire hooks on the tac and like joe said set at 6
