Tacho problems

Hi all
I have recently has my local RNLI electrician rewire the dash on my omc 4.3 1992 but we are having lots of problems with the tacho.
Should it be wired through the esa (if it is then it seems to jump around a lot)
Or
Should it be wired direct to the negative of the distributer (this does not seem right either)
Or
should it be wire to the alternator

The ESA is new.

I have had a conversion done recently from cobra leg to mercruiser alpha 1 gen two leg. Within thsi conversion it says some thing about by passing the esa but i dont beleive this has been done as the interuopter switch still works.

PLEASE HELP summer is glorious this year and we are set with problems so boat is layed on its mooring.

I think this has been done we have also tried a wire direct from the - of the coil straight to the tacho. But we are dubious as to wether this will effect the esa

a new 1992 tach? is the replacement tach for an i/o or an outboard? is itthe right part- pulse switch on th back set correctly for your number of cylinders (how ever many that may be)

If you google image search 1992 cobra wiring - you'll see the factory manual wiring diagram posted up by some pay-for-advice guys that have no respect for copyright. Or, buy a factory manual from ebay or outboardbooks.com

I suggest you use the factory wiring diagram to wire your ignition and tachometer the way OMC did originally and see how the tach works. As far as an SEI conversion and rewiring of the shift interrupt/ESA, I believe they have the instructions at the SEI site and most folks who have followed them properly during the conversion had success so you'll want to review that instruction and see if it was done right.
