Tacho on pull start

I have a 1984

Is it possible?
I have a 1984 50hp 4cyl pull start merc. Can i run tacho from the coil just like a car? or is there another way?

However I was looking for more an old school look (have wooden boat).
Is there any reason why I cant get a 4cyl car tach and run it of the coil and a battery?

"Darryl, if you are really set on having a certain "look", you could always swap out the stator and put in one for the electric start model. Could be a little pricey (believe they sell for over 200 bucks - but could look for used on Ebay). That would provide you with the conventional hook-up for the tach and as an added bonus you could pick-up a voltage regulator (from a Merc lighting kit) and use the motor to provide power for your nav lights while under power...."
