Tach to test with on a 1978 johnson 35hp

"I have as title says a 1978 Johnson 35hp, what kind of tach do I need to test do repairs and maintenance on this engine ? Do I need a special outboard tach or will any automotive tachometer work ? Ive searched the forum all I find is how to install a tach etc..

You need a tachometer that will operates off of the engines alternator six (6) pulse charging system if your engine has a charging system. The tachometer must have a dial on the back whereas you can set it to number six (6).

will the digital multi meter rpm testers work with outboards ? like what the have at Harbor Freight ?
or a automotive rpm gauge ?"
 
i use a strobe tach to check r

i use a strobe tach to check rpm's it seems to work good on any small motor at any rpm up to 6000 and down to 50 if it will run that slow
