How do I go about hooking up a

How do I go about hooking up a tach to my motor ('81 Johnson 60hp)? I have searched the internet and found numerous examples. Thanks.

"u should be able to plug in to your box,but i will assume,u dont have the plug,...so,go in to control box,...add on to purple,gray,and blk,run to location of tach,....gray,is sender or pulse wire,blk--grnd,pruple is hot."

"if im not mistaken , doin thi

"if im not mistaken , doin this from memory, the 2 pins side by side ---the one on the left is ground the one on the right is signal and the one alone on the bottom is key/hot (ignition switch)

the best way to make sure is to take the control box apart.......if you hook it up wrong you will fry your tach and possibly your regulator."

How big is the tach that's

How big is the tach that's able to be plugged into this recepticle? I want to mount it into the console but don't want to mess with it's integrity.

the plug is just for the wires

the plug is just for the wires......youll have to find a place to mount it...........i believe mines a 3"...you may be able to get a bracket similar to the ones for auto gauges but im not sure.

"You have two options:
1) purchase a tach that has the OEM 3-prong plug like this one: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/OMC-JOHNSON-EVINRUDE-OUTBOARD-TACHOMETER-(BR%2373 58)_W0QQitemZ310131393899QQcmdZViewItemQQimsxZ20090326?IMSfp=TL0903261210004r178 73

2) Purchase a generic tach like this Teleflex unit like this one: http://www.overtons.com/modperl/product/details.cgi?i=73310&pdesc=Teleflex_Eclip se_Tachometer&aID=101A&merchID=1009&r=view and wire it direct in the control box.

Tach wires are as follows:

Purple = 12V accessory (only hot with key on)
Black = ground
Grey = pulse (tach) signal

Generic tachs will have a dial on the back that you switch to match the pulse signal of your outboard. I'm pretty certain that yours will be a 6-pulse.

I've done it both ways on two different outboards with perfectly fine results on each one.

Good luck."
