Tach problems

I recently bought a boat that the owner had just put a new tach in... the tach reads fine at a idle but as soon as I touch the throttle it pegs right to 7000...the motor is a merc 125 outboard.. anyone have suggestions before I start my troubleshooting??

Hi.
It's probably on the wrong pole setting. There is usually a pole on the back of the tach, try it on next pole number,if it's on 6P,move it to next number,I'm having a senior moment,I can't remember if there is an 8P or is the next one 12P.Must be the late hour.:D

Ok thanks for the info...I will give that a try. So definetly go up with the pins and not down?.. Im ready to start working on it so I can get the tach info so I can start playing with different props.

Place the dip switch on the 12 pole position, make sure to push down on it lightly, as your motor probley has a 12 pole altenator. As for the prop , Solas web site have alot of good info as to which will work best for your intended use. best of luck.
