Tach issues

I have a 2001 mercury 150 carb

I have a 2001 mercury 150 carburetor motor with your standard tach. The tach every once in a while will read funny where it reads something like 2300 rpms but the motor is at idle. Then other times it seems to be working fine giving an accurate reading.. All wiring seems to be hooked up properly. Any suggestions??
