"I have a 1984 mariner 40hp, it is hooked up to a quicksilver control box. The ignition switch has 2 yellow wires coming out of it, will these two yellow wires be the tach signal? I have a teleflex tach that says run the send wire to the gray in the control box and T it off to also hook up to 2 yellow wires. I have no gray wire in my control box, just black brown white and yellow. any ideas????"

"Brown is the send wire,at lea

"Brown is the send wire,at least it is on my control box, white is the live, black is the ground, the yellow??? to yellow maybe???"

"Your post hit just as I poste

"Your post hit just as I posted JB, I'm using a mariner control box, there are three pins recessed. But Clark if you have a plug at the front, hook a wire into a pin/spade, switch on key, using a test light connect to earth and touch the wire,if it lights, you have the live/white,if not move the wire around the plug until you get a light. When it lights, insert second wire into next pin/spade,hook test light to it, touch live, if it lights you have found the black/ground.If not ,hat particular pin/spade is the sender/brown and the other must be the ground/black. Do not start engine while doing this."

"so i did some relooking, i ha

"so i did some relooking, i have a brown wire that comes from a box just below the starter that comes all the way to the ignition switch. That box also has the battery cables connected to it. is this the rectifier? the yellow does go to the neutral safety switch, there is also a black (2), pink, and white (2) wires. Im thinking if brown comes from rectifier then it should be send wire?

1 white and 1 black goes to kill switch
yellow and black goes to neutral safety switch

I red has power and white has power with switch off.

"Hi Clarke, 3x black = ground,

"Hi Clarke, 3x black = ground, Yellow+black = kill switch, white without power when key is off is tach + black, brown is tach send, red and white constant live +black = tilt trim,I believe it to be the three button system, where two buttons must be pressed to operate, center+top raises, center+bottom lowers tilt n trim, red up, white down. And if I'm wrong,I live at the south pole

Is the key switch separate from the control box?Or is it a side mount with harness? This is real curiosity on my part"
