Have a 1983 75 hp Johnson I just completely rebuilt.
I have a mechanical shifter (push lever forward for accelerate and forward and pull back for reverse).
I know I need a hot wire and ground. What wire do I hook the tach up to and is there a wire in the shifter carrying the signal?

Your remote should have a rubb

Your remote should have a rubber plug with 3 wires below the key.
Red (B+)
Black (ground)
Grey (signal)

Below the key is a green and y

Below the key is a green and yellow attached to each other and black with a yellow stripe. I will open the shifter up and see if the colors you state are pushed inside. These 3 wires look like they where just clipped and separated from the boat the motor came out of.

It should be like a female plug Amphenol contact with three sleeves (same as You have in the ignition system).

"What I found inside the shif

"What I found inside the shift box was gray was
spliced to green, purple was spliced to yellow. Black was grounded inside the box to the box. I saw a large red line away from where I was looking hook in to the ignition switch and
the gray that turned to green came up thru the cased line from the motor. The purple that becomes yellow comes off the ignition switch also this is prob hot but I have not tested it yet.
Looks like gray then green is the sending. Black is ground. Is ground here good enough? Purple hot?"

"Purple is 'hot' when

"Purple is 'hot' when ign is 'on'.
Black should may be grounded in box provided a black from engine harness is grounded to the same screw!!!
Grey is the 'pulse' and note:Hot when engine is running! If grounded when running, you burn both regulator and stator."

Just got done using a tester and all is as you stated except I did not crank the motor to test the gray.
I will check and make sure the black has an ground coming form the motor. The black that is grounded is
done in a place that looks like what the factory did. Any generic tach ok? Thanks very much for your help.

You need one that is adjustabl

You need one that is adjustable depending on charge frequency. Set it at "6" (6 pulses /rev)

"In my manual(Seloc 1992-9

"In my manual(Seloc 1992-96,80-300hp),the wiring diagram clearly shows purple ,grey and black in the rubber contact.
The purple goes to tach. and trimgauge,
activates 12V when ignition key is turned one step clockwice.
Grey-signal
Black-ground
Have they changed wire-coulors since 1983 or?
Just wondering Morten,are you Norwegian,anyway,so am I."

As shown above looks as if we

As shown above looks as if we have figured out
what is what. Morten I believe is correct do to what I found inside the box. Some one in the past prior to my owner ship clipped and added back on with the wrong colors inside the box.
One more question about the correct tach for this
motor. Morten says above adjustable for the charge frequency. I have found some which say
5/6/10/20 pole outboards. Is this what I am looking for?

"Arild:
Yes, a 'run away', for the time being in Malaysia.
Chip:
That should work, put it on 6."
