"Hi All, and greetings from the UK.

For once im not asking any advice.. Just to let you all know my AQ200d was running A-OK today. She now has pertronix ignition, a flamethrower coil and new dizzy cap/rotor and leads.
After a bit of faffing resetting the timing she has run well throughout the rev range without faultering between 800-1500rpm. She is no rocket ship but she ran well all afternoon and, though still very thirsty, seemed a bit better on Fuel Mileage..

Anyway, thanks to all (especiall El Pescador) for your help so far..

regards,

Nick"

"Glad it worked well. Now, you may want to increase the gap a bit more in your spark plugs. According to Pertronix, "In most cases increasing the factory recommended gap by .005 improves the engine performance.""

"oo thanks for that... i may have to give that a go now the engine 'seems'to be behaving itself.

One good thing thats come out of all this work is that i feel i have a better understanding how things work which allows you to relax a bit more when you're 5 miles out to sea.

"Nick, one of the ideas of participating in a forum like this one is to get people involved in their boat's repairs and maintenance. That way, their chances of having problems are smaller; and if they have a problem in the middle of nowhere, they will likely have an idea of where to look."

"Yep does may a big difference. I had no knowledge of Carb fed American Engines before buying the latest boat. (Being brought up on British / Japanese cars, mostly with Fuel Injection)

Also it was totally back to basics with this one, having 'points' etc and i was surprised just how much ignition issues affected carburation.... like my issue where she ran really well from 1500rpm up to max revs and would idle fine but would faulter between 800 and 1500 rpm. I was sure it was a carb issue and it turned out to be located in the distributor.

Has been a good (if sometimes frustrating) learning curve so far."

"Hello Nick,
Can you please elaborate on the fault you found in your distributor, which caused your engine to falter between 800 and 1500 rpm. I am currently having similar problems with my AQ151C and am also thinking that thr carbs may be at fault. Thanks. Lawrence."

"Hi Lawrence,

Well my distributor was still running points and the rotor wasn't in great condition.
I replaced the rotor and fitted a Pertronix electronic ignition module.

I also replaced the distributor cap and leads to be on the safe side.

Anyway after fitting those few bits and resetting the timing the low speed running issue was cured.
Before looking at carbs i would always make sure the electrical parts are A1 first.

hope that helps a bit.

Nick"
