"Iam a truck mechanic & all of my vehicle's run on synthetic oil.I want to run it in my Johnson 175 (1999)seapro.My marine mechanic does not recommend.I believe in it (trustme lots of mile's on vehicle's)Now saying that I only will put in class eight truck's if there under a 100,000 mile's because it does seem to leak more because of the propertie's.Big truck's leak oil (old or new)anyway i want the best can you give me a reason not too or any suggestion.s ?
Thank's

"Allen, I'll pop over from the Merc board and give you my two cents (and you will probably get lots of contradicting opinions).

On a conventional "carburated" 2 stroke that runs premixed gas/oil I use the regular TCW3 "dinosaur" oil. Well mixed it passes through the carb with no issues and burns up just as well as anything else once it hit's the cylinder.

On Oil Injected Carb'd motors (VRO/VRO2 etc) I run at least a semi-sythetic. I just trust it to mix better with the gas in this type of system.

On EFI models you should run fully sythetic. It's "slippery and thin" compared to the others (which is why it leaks and blows by in old vehicle engines once they are worn) and just passes through the system better.

And if you have a DFI model (such as an ETEC/OPTI etc) you MUST run DFI rated oil, since the oil and gas never mix until they both get to the cylinder head at full compression.

So for me it's a question of "how well will it mix with the gas" and "what size jet am I trying to squeeze it through" based on the fuel system of the particular motor...."

"When I switched from TCW3 to

"When I switched from TCW3 to XD50 several years back, I noticed a substantial improvement in idle quality. There is little to no smoke at idle, and less than the usual smoke at startup. After 7 years of XD50, my Evinrude 90 has better compression than when I bought it 10 years ago. I switched to it immediately when I got my newer boat this year with a Johnson 150."

There have been some threads on the aomci site regarding the use of synthetic oils in the older outboards. Most who have used it think it smokes less than regular and some feel it may be more environmentally friendly. And no one has even hinted at losing a motor due to its usage.

"Dcramer:
The XD50 has a 'built in' sea foam additive that prevents carbon build up, which might be the reason to your experience. A similar result I used to get when using the old 'carbon guard' and TCW3.
On the early Fichts, I even used the Carbon Guard in addition to the XD 50 to prevent plug fouling with quite good results."

Are you guys telling me that I can use XD50 instead of the TCW3 in my oil tank. If so can I add it directly to the existing TCW3 oil in the tank or should I wait until it is almost empty?

"XD 50 is a TCW3 oil, and may

"XD 50 is a TCW3 oil, and may be mixed with other TCW 3 oils.
However normally I would recommend to run out as much of the 'old' oil as possible, clean the tank and start fresh."
