The synchronizer on my 1984 45

The synchronizer on my 1984 454 Crusaders doesn't work. Do I need to replace it? Vessel has seperate controls for both engines.

"Check closely. I didn't think my synchronizer worked until evening and the sun wasn't so bright (thats if you have the flashing light type of synchronizer). That said, synchronizers are a nice option, but an option none-the-less. My current boat is the only one I have ever owned that has one. If you have a good ear, and reasonably accurate tachs, you don't need a synchronizer. When the engines are running at close to - but not quite - even, there will be a sort of harmonic thrumming that will go away as you even out the engines'RPM's. For me the synchronizer is just a confirmation that I am correct."
