"I have a 1996 Sunbird 170 I/O

"I have a 1996 Sunbird 170 I/O. I have been told that I need to completely rebuild my SX Cobra 1.97 ratio stern drive, about $4000. Last year I found a small machine shop in Maine that rebuilds these units for a lot less money now I can't find it again. I'm told the boat in working condition is only worth $3500. I have a dilemma. Any suggestions?"

"Mike, in today's day and age, you will probably better off running your current equipment to destruction if you bought in advance a good used replacement for a good price. Many times you can buy 2-3 used outdrives (hopefully in reasonably good condition) for the price of letting someone else rebuild your current one. I know which way I would go (even if taking a gamble)."
