"I soon will be switching engines in my boat. Before physically separating the engine from the drive is there anything in particular I need to do? Does my gear selector need to be in a certain position or just in neutral? Do I need to remove, loosen partially or all the way any particular part of the drive? I am keeping my stock sterndrive (1978 OMC 800) just switching engines (305 to another 305). Is there an online guide or checklist here with step by step directions I could utilize? I have a good friend who has switched engines in a boat with a mercruiser sterndrive so we have that knowledge to use as a baseline. He has never done an engine switch in a boat with an OMC sterndrive."

"G'day Robert,

The only thing you have to be careful of is keeping your fingers out of the way as blood makes a mess, and is hard to clean up.

If the engines are the same, then nothing on the Stern Drive will alter.

It doesn't matter what settings are there, as the engine will simply slip forward, if the Coupler Spline hasn't rusted together, and then lift it out.

Bruce."
