"i have a 1979 merc. 115 horsepower serial #4858611. i had my engine checked by a outboard motor mech. because i was getting no fire at all,he said i need a new s/b i bought one from cdi serial #1142986 i put it on just like the instructions said too and still no fire. the old s/b had 3 posts on the igition side and 4 on the harness side. now when i wired it back i taped off the red wire that came from the the old cd because instructions said it was no longer needed.when i got through wireing i had a brown wire comming from the harness with no where to go. do you think that they could have put the wrong cdi in the box? or i made a mistake.

"The red is battery, white is ign. Brown is the tach gauge that goes to the charge rectifier (either yellow) if the gauge is a modern 3 wire type. There is a small mercury tilt switch on one side that should be removed.

This is a pretty relable system, but what does go wrong is the sensor inside the distributor. Or someone hooking up the battery backwards will blow the box. Check out the key switch to see if it is still feeding the white wire.
I do not recall that red wire being replaced by anything."

i hooked up the brown wire coming from the ignnition side, but i still have a browm wire coming out of the harness that i have no idea where it goes.

There are 3 wires from the distributor on one side and 4 pegs on the other, right? Those should be red, white ,green, and brown. Ignore the brown. That will not stop it from running.
Red is hot, white is key power, and green is coil primary, and brown was original tach gauge."

Ok. The colors do matter as far as the trigger side goes. No other wires go on that side of the box except out of the distributor. Get rid of that tilt switch wire.
 
You may have the wrong box or

You may have the wrong box or I am not familiar with the CDI s/b box. Some kind of conversion it seems.

OK here's what you do. Car

OK here's what you do. Carefully! Unhook all the trigger wires. The brown and white pegs on the trigger side if touched together will trigger the module to fire the coil if the key is on. DON'T LEAVE IT CONNECTED!! That works on the original box anyway.

Forget about the brown wire in the harness for now. The motor will run without it.

Ok. That should have sent a spark out of the coil. The box may not have power going in on the white lead from the key anymore. I am still not sure on the red. The coil is still good?

The red wire came from the old cd to the rectifire battery terminal. The instructions said to tape it off because it was no longer needed.

I am trying to find out adout the CDI unit that you have. Is there a white wire on your unit? (key power)

"TROUBLESHOOTING THE CDI MODULE:
With the spark gap tester to the high tension lead coming from the ignition coil, disconnect the Brown, White and
Black trigger wires. Connect a jumper wire from the slot for the Brown wire to the slot for the White wire. Connect
another jumper to the slot for the Black wire and (with the key switch turned on) strike the jumper against engine
ground. The unit should fire each time. If it does, the CD module is usually good."

my leg has been giving me some problems so i havent done any test yet. i was talking to john and he sug
gested that i use a jumper wire from the battery to the hot wire on the s/b . what do you think of that?
