swapping out everything to merc

Hi there can anybody tell me what I need exactly to change out my 4.3 omc engine and drive to merc 4.3 engine and drive. I have a 1987 check mate and am going to meet a guy tomorrow that has a boat salvage yard. He told me I need the engine, drive,gimbal housing, controls, shift cable and wire harness and guages. Is that everything? Do I have to do any mods to the transom? thanx guys :)
 
I have a omc cobra drive, The salvage guy is telling me it is a straight foward swap with no mods needed. He is telling me I can have this boat together in 5 solid days with a merc engine and drive. I just dont want to get over my head on money or know how. I paid 500 for boat and it is in really nice shape ,clean everywhere. The salvage guy said he would sell me everything listed in first post for 1900 plus my good cobra outdrive. What do you think??
 
if your motor is still good then you need to change the the mani's to fit the y pipe of the merc.

So you need mani's risers to fit the y pipe you need the y pipe inner transom bracket and everything that hangs off the back of the boat.

Don't forget you need the coupler and maybe the flywheel.
 
Wow $500 for a checkmate that's a good deal if it's in solid shape. Too bad you're only putting v6 in it. I nice healthy 300hp 5.7 would make it a really nice boat. I used to have a 69 16' checkmate with a 150hp Merc and a cleaver prop. It would top 70 MPH but kind of scary if a chop came up. Keep in mind with the swap you will probably want to buget an extra $1000 for the little unexpecteds that will come up.
