swapping carbed outboard for efi outboard?

Hello everyone.
New to the forum and I'm having trouble getting information on swapping out a carbureted outboard with an efi outboard.
I currently have a 1996 force 120 on my boat and I'm looking to replace it with a 1998 mercury 150 efi.
Will I need to add an electric fuel pump? Also will my existing throttle controls work or will I need to upgrade these as well?
Any other info will be a great help.
Thanks!
Mike.

You won't need to add a fuel pump - outboards are totally "self-contained" in that manner.

Your controls will probably "not work", at least not without some retro-fit.

Force was was built by US Marine which was a division of Bayliner boats. Bayliner bought the Chrysler outboard division when it went bankrupt and started building motors to package with their boats. Within a few years of that happening, Brunswick (who owned/owns Merc) bought out Bayliner and inherited Force along with it.

They gave the Force division to Merc and Merc incorporated them into their line-up.

The fundamental way the throttle/shift worked between the two is different. With one you "shorten" the cable to increase throttle - the other you "lengthen" the cable.

If you have an OEM US Marine shifter they can be disassembled and the cam which controls whether it "pushes or pulls the cable" can be reversed. I have done this on more than a couple - it's not rocket science but it can be a bit of a pain - the existing cables will either fit at the engine end or the ends can be swapped out (that connect to the throttle and shift on the engine end of things).

Additionally, if your wiring is a component of the shifter it will NOT be compatible with the newer Merc. Even if you have a dash key set-up, the harness is not going to be the same and will have to be replace (however, at somewhat less cost than an integral control unit).

So, your answer is No - no fuel pump.

Maybe you can use your controls (if the cam can be modified),

And No, your existing harness will NOT work.

Do some home work on the 98 150 EFI, like the cost of the HP Fuel pump and the filter in the VST along with the top VST seal.

Maybe you want to get into a newer 150 Fourstroke.
