Swap out AQ131 for a 125A?

Oh, wise and wonderful marine gurus, I come seeking answers....

So, hubby bought a 1987 Bayliner with a AQ131(?) which is seized due to rust. Just now a friend brought him a good 125A engine. Can he swap out the 131 for the 125A? (
I don't know the last letter designation of the 131 engine- A,B, C, or D. Can't read it on the tag, and tried finding the 131 engine/outdrive on volvo penta website, without avail.) I'd really appreciate any information/recommendations you might have to offer. Thank you.

Thanks, ebacon, but i'm in California, imagine the shipping cost! I didn't know about the for sale part of this website, maybe there's one for sale in my area. The boat is a 18 or 19 ft cuddy cab. Hubby and friend are already wrenching on the 125. A lift will be here in a couple hours to lift it inside the boat. Glad to know the 125 will at least bolt in. I'm wondering ...will it also bolt right to the existing outdrive? And are there other components we should check for compatability? Thanks

I've never done a 131/125 swap. I just read here that the bell housings patterns are the same.

I imagine the job is straightforward. The one thing I would do is count the splines and measure the diameter of the shaft inside the bellhousing. Verify that it mates with the engine.

The engine mounts might be in different places, too.

Other than that it's just three hose connections, a battery connection, a drive lift connection, and an instrument panel plug and you should be off to the races.

There is also a risk of finding rot in the stringers which is a headache all its own. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you. I just opened up my 1987 Bayliner and luckily it was rot free.

Erin, much of the ease of this will depend on how the AQ131 was removed.
Are they disconnecting the AQ131 from the flywheel cover, and leaving the flywheel cover attached to the transom shield, or did they remove the flywheel cover with the AQ131?

Post back.... there are several does/don'ts if interested in hearing about them.

My suggestion would have been buying a B230 car engine from an auto wrecker (from a Volvo 244 85-93 or Volvo 85-92 740 8 valve car) and marinizing it. Your hubby would just have to transplant all the marine parts (camshaft, exhaust & intake manifolds, fuel pump, distributor, heat exchanger, raw water pump, etc) and the final result would be identical to the original AQ131.

Thanks to all of you. I'm just now able to check back here...long shifts, and my pillow is calling Promise to fill you in tomorrow. Thank you all again for you input and interest... good group you have here. erin

First...Thanks again, guys, for all your input. The engine swap went pretty quickly and smoothly, with everything bolting up nicely. He's just about finished re-wiring from dash to engine. I appreciate that you would take the time and interest and lend your expertise.
Maybe you could help me with a dual battery switch question. Are they all the same ? What if anything goes into determining which one to buy. Is there a specific amp/ volt designation? I'm sure my husband knows, but I want to surprise him with one today. He's got 2 marine batteries and an isolator, but the switch he had is broken. Thanks again, and I'll keep you posted as things progress.. erin
