Help! - I have the following symptoms. Motor will start OK. The RPMs drop off until it eventually quits. If I put the engine in gear there is no power and then it dies. I've pulled and dried the tank and drained all the gas (in case of water). I've adjusted the idle with no real help (just prolongs the process). I've replaced all the fuel lines. Is there an easy way to check the fuel pump? I hate to replace it if that is not the problem. Any suggestions or ideas? Thanks!

That's pretty much what I figured. I'll poke around other threads before I ask what is involved with rebuilding the carbs... Thanks

"OK for the record. I removed the fuel pump and took it apart. There was some black charred fuel on the engine side of the pump (probably not a good thing). The diaphragms looked fine so I cleaned it up and put it back together. Was that the problem, I don’t think so.

I also removed the carbs and then removed the float bowl screws. I found some rust or old jelled gas in the float bowl of the bottom carb. I proceeded to clean the carbs, removed the jets and blew them out with compressed air. I also pulled needle valve assembly and inspected the gasket and needle. They looked just fine. I went ahead and reset all of the pilot jets to 1 1/8 turns.

Now here is where I think my problem may have been. After putting the needle valves back in and replacing the float I wanted to check the actuation of the valve with the float position. I found both needle valves where sticking closed after the float pushed them shut. So I took them back out and cleaned the needle valve assemblies very good with brake pad cleaner and compressed air. After replacing them and the float I found they actuated perfectly, opening and closing with the float as they are supposed to. I think I had dirty needle jet valve assemblies that caused the motor to starve for fuel.

After putting it all back together I lake tested it and it ran great."
