Suzuki Propeller problem? Bad design?

winter

New member
I have a DF6 with a motor that runs well, good prop output at low speed, but at high speed, the engine reves up and prop output drops. Prop is not spinning as fast as the motor is. It is slipping.

So I am replacing the prop. Engine is 4 years old, used about 15 hrs per year.

Question? Is this a bad design? There is no sheer pin? I see they use this design in the 9.9 models as well.

Having said all that, I was in a bad storm, with 40+ mph winds, in my sailboat. Thats when this all started, so maby the high thrust output against the wind for 30 minutes did the prop in? I was in deep water, so did not hit anything.

It sounds like you have "spun the prop". Most props now days have a rubber sleeve installed under pressure between the hub and the prop itself. This serves to help protect the engine if you should hit something hard with the prop. Over time rubber deteriorates and the hub spins inside the prop under high prop loads. It has been a while since I have spun one, but as I recall, a local prop shop was able to press in a new rubber sleeve. It was a much bigger prop than you are dealing with, but call a prop shop and ask what your options are.

Thanks. I ordered a new prop and the insert. Not sure there is any rubber in it, but will see when they arrive.

If they need to be pressed in, I will need a shop to do that.

If you can buy the insert separately, you must have a different type prop than I was talking about. Maybe the insert is a sacrificial part that should be kept as a spare.

I got the new prop and the insert. (Black plastic smooth outside thing with teeth inside) The prop has a insert in it from the factory, so I will use that one.

Now i will try to find a way to replace the insert on the spun prop. Any ideas? Do I just find a press to get the old one out and put the new one in?

So at the end of the day I have a spare prop. (Minus $90 in the wallet)
