surfacing starter commutator

due to the brushes and commutator of outboard motors being on the base of the starter they tend to wear the aria of brush contact. not having a machinist lathe i found that by making a flat disc, from some smooth fiberglass(or other suitable material) using a large hole saw, provided me with a solid backing for stick on sandpaper. start with about, 80 grit finish with 320-400 for smooth surface. the hole saw provides a place for the center shaft to pass through and the disc seems to self center and stay squarely at a 90 degree to the shaft. be sure to provide space around the center of the sandpaper,so as not to sand down the center shaft. hopefully this may help some one resurrect a. failing starter.best wishes: oldwrench
