The 280 outdrive is a swedish

The 280 outdrive is a swedish product right? I assumed that all of the nuts and bolts were metric so I went out and bought a metric thread gauge so that I could get the right taps and dies to chase all the threads on the outdrive. I could not get the correct reading on the thread guage! I went to a local machine shop and they verified that the bolts in question were not metric but American! It just goes to show you that the old adage about assume is true! It makes an ASS out of U and ME.
I thought this might be of some help to you guys in the future.

"while on the subject , i assumed the same thing as i was having trouble screwing in the aluminium ring that holds the transom plate to the bell- housing, i found that there are two treads in the hole the first half inch is taped to about 12mm wide of some type of thread .but after a half inch the thread stops and the next thread is reduced to about 5/16 th in , question has some one tried to re tap the holes to a larger size or did volvo do two taps to alow different bolts to be used, question, does any one know what the bolts should be.
its the b20 engine about 90 hp and the 100 volvo penta leg"

"The 'old' 100 - 290 drives were made in Sweden, Koping. Note that even the B16,18,20 engines have unc bolts!"

"Jeff,
You are correct. I checked the Volvo-Penta web site and found that the drives are made in a plant in Lexington Kentucky. My 280 drive circa 1970/1980 has a part number plate riveted to the drive that states "Made in Sweden" so my original assumption was partialy correct. Now that I have the straight poop I have chased all of the bolts and threaded holes with the correct size taps and dies to make putting the drive back together easier. I expect the engine to be American as it is a GM product that has been marinized. Thanks for your input and I hope this information will help others in the future."
