 My old (66?) has a shifting problem. It will shift into forward, but unless it's stalling, it will only spin the prop slowly. I try to idle it down as low as possible and shift. After 10 minutes of cursing, it will engege, and away I go. Reverse is not a problem.I have used type c penzoil lube in the unit. I changed the lower leg after the wiring was roasted in the previous one (which worked well!) Has anybody got any thoughts where too look? Thanks, Dan

Re: super seahorse 40 shift problems

I assume the unit is a electric shift model due to the mention of wiring. If the wiring is as it should be and the proper voltage is being applied to the forward coil, I'd suspect the problem to be........

That electric shift unit requires what is called "Premium Blend" gearlube, also known as "Type C", available at your dealership, and I believe also at Sierra. Nothing else will function properly.

If the above doesn't correct the problem, suspect scoring of the forward hub which would cause the spring to slip upon it.

NOTE: The forward hub has a crosshatch design imprinted upon it, the reverse hub does not. The two are not interchangeable.

Re: super seahorse 40 shift problems

I did not measure the voltage as of yet, saw that in a previous thread from you. I will look into this. I can tell you that this engine had a generator system, but I removed it as it had failed and the wiring was junk. I normally have 1 battery on board, so it could be dropping the voltage too much. Again, I will look at these things. Thanx Dan
