"I'm giving my 4hp 1997 2s

"I'm giving my 4hp 1997 2stroke Mariner Sailmate a spring service but she is completely lacking in power.

Symptoms are: Engine starts nicely, ticks over at idle happily and revs up in neutral no probs. However, as soon as its put in gear at idle or low revs it just dies. At higher revs it will just maintain revs for a short while, and sometimes allow more revs to be put on, but often just dies, and I dont want to keep crashing it into gear at high revs.

Have stripped and cleaned the carb and fuel line, replaced spark plug and gear-box is clean and appears ok - so any ideas on whats the problem ? Is is possible a low rev mixture that is out or jet needs replacing that will give these symptoms ??

Any help welcome as always

Too small a motor for anything

Too small a motor for anything but a light inflatable with a kid aboard. You need to invest in at least a 5 to 8 hp TWO cylinder motor. Why two cylinders? If a plug fouls the other one keeps her going.

Single cylinder outboards should be banned by law.

"Could be a bad low speed jet

"Could be a bad low speed jet - the end of it (when you have it out) should be like a very very sharp pencil - if deformed in any way it must be replaced.

It also could be out of adjustment if you had the carb stripped down. Seat it gently, back it out 1 1/2 turns and see how that works for you..."

"If there was no change after

"If there was no change after the carb was cleaned it could be a blocked filter or fuel line. But, are you sure you removed both of the metering jets and made sure all the passage ways were clear? It sure sounds like one of the passage ways in the carb is blocked. Goes without saying that if the idle circuit was blocked it wouldn't idle. I'd be looking at the main jet circuit. If it will run up with the choke on then the problem is in the carb. If not it could be ignition but I doubt this from what you've said."
